Grant Program

The River Forest Public Library Foundation Grant Program funds projects which enrich or enable Library growth and/or promote engagement with the River Forest Public Library and/or the RFPL Foundation.

Since 2015, the Foundation has disbursed over $200,000 for innovative projects and programs supporting RFPL.

Proposals are accepted from any tax-exempt charity for consideration during three grant cycles per year. For consideration, apply by the following dates:
  • April 1
  • July 1
  • October 1

ANNE T. SMEDINGHOFF MEMORIAL GARDEN
This popular multi-use outdoor area expands the footprint of the library and is maintained with annual Foundation funds. The garden is used extensively for ​programs, informal gatherings, and outdoor Wifi access.
SPECIAL EVENTS
The Foundation sponsors community-wide programs to engage with all residents, including:
  • Annual concert, featuring local artists "The Dooley Band" is entertaining an average of 150-200 attendees
  • Summer Reading Kickoff Party, offering fun games and activities for children, plus sweet treats for readers of all ages from Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor and entertainment from School of Rock

CAPITAL PROJECTS
  • A significant Foundation grant helped fund the Space Conversion Project to explore the feasibility of repurposing an interior mechanical room for program and community space when replacing an HVAC system component. With Phase One completion, a much-needed basic multipurpose space will be available for use with additional improvements planned for Phase Two.
  • The Middle School & Teen Area Refresh provides more comfortable areas to sit and work or to socialize in a modern, welcoming space 
  • The Children's Room Update made the room more welcoming and accessible with new shelving, service desk, carpeting, and paint.
  • A Foundation funded Self-Checkout Machine in the Library lobby provides faster service while promoting social distancing, an important factor during COVID-19
